Autumn Photoshoots in Munich: Bavaria's Most Beautiful Season for Photos

When October arrives in Munich, something magical happens. The trees in the Englischer Garten ignite in gold, crimson, and deep amber. The light turns lower and warmer. The air carries that particular scent of wet leaves and wood smoke.

Autumn is my favourite season for photoshoots. Here's why — and where.

Why Autumn Is Perfect for Family Photos

In autumn, everything works together: the light is soft and warm, nature provides a ready-made backdrop, and children are often more energetic and playful than during the hot summer months. Piles of leaves for jumping and throwing are included free of charge.

Autumn also has a natural logic as a time for family photos — the year is drawing to a close, children are another year older, and Christmas photo books are just around the corner.

Best Autumn Locations in Munich

Englischer Garten

Nowhere in Munich is more breathtaking in autumn than the English Garden. The ancient plane trees and oaks along the main paths become cathedrals of light and colour. Particularly stunning: the paths along Kleinhesseloher See and the open meadows near the Chinese Tower.

Nymphenburg Palace Gardens

Nymphenburg's baroque garden in autumn is almost unreal. The long, straight avenues become rivers of gold leading into the light. The palace in the background, the still water of the canals, the reflections of coloured trees — for couples and elegant family portraits, my first choice in autumn.

Hirschgarten and Westpark

Less well-known but equally beautiful: Hirschgarten with its ancient chestnut trees, and Westpark with its varied landscape. Fewer tourists, more relaxed sessions.

The Best Time for Autumn Shoots

September: Colours beginning to turn, light still warm, sunset around 7:30 PM.

October: The heart of Munich's autumn. Full colour, fallen leaves, dramatic skies. My personal favourite.

November: Starker, more mysterious. Bare branches, mist, silver light. For couples who like a more dramatic mood.

Practical Notes

Autumn sessions are popular — book 6–8 weeks in advance. Bring warm layers. Collecting and throwing leaves is absolutely encouraged.
