Photoshoots at Starnberger See: Bavaria's Most Beautiful Lake Setting
Thirty minutes south of Munich lies a place that looks as if it was purpose-built for photography. Starnberger See — framed by the Alps in the distance, with sailboats on the water and old villas along the shore — is one of the most breathtaking natural studios I know.
Why Starnberger See Is Perfect for Photo Sessions
Lakes have a unique photographic quality: water reflects light, creating a soft natural fill that lifts shadows beautifully. Combine that with the Alpine peaks in the background, and you have a backdrop other photographers would fly to the other side of the world for.
Best Spots Around Starnberger See
Starnberg Town — Promenade and Old Jetty
The town has a beautiful lakeside promenade with a historic wooden jetty and pebble beach. For couple and wedding shoots, early morning here is particularly special, when the lake is still wrapped in mist.
Berg — Quiet and Picturesque
The small village of Berg on the eastern shore is less well-known but photographically beautiful. Flat shoreline, old willows, views of the Alpine chain — almost no tourists.
Tutzing and Bernried — Southern Shore
Especially green and quiet. There are spots here where you genuinely feel like you're at the edge of the world — surrounded by green hills, blue water, and the blue-white of the Bavarian sky.
Ammersee — The Less-Known Alternative
Just 20 minutes away — quieter, wilder, less developed. For families who want truly natural photos.
Best Seasons
Summer: Warm water, children paddling, long evenings. Spring: Blooming meadows, fresh green, no crowds. Autumn: Still water reflecting coloured forests, dramatic sky.
